Otherwise, it's the same winning formula as the original. They're closer to the fast zombies of 28 Days Later and the Dawn of the Dead remake (which gets name-checked) and dubbed T-800s ( Terminator 2 also gets referenced). The only new wrinkle is that some of the zombies are harder to kill than previous incarnations. Their relationship is the weakest part of the film. It's an odd case where two charming screen presences actually have zero chemistry together. The de facto leader himself also gets a love interest in Nevada (Rosario Dawson). (She mostly spent her days hiding in the industrial freezer at Pinkberry.) Her arrival immediately puts tension between Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) and Wichita (Emma Stone), and gives Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) a new person to hurl insults towards. She's a stereotypical dumb blonde, but also clever enough to have survived for a decade with zombies running around. The best of the new characters is definitely Madison, played with a wink by Zoey Deutch. But once Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) sets out on her own and picks up hippie musician Berkeley (Avan Jogia), the film puts the pedal to the medal as the rest of the group tries to catch up with her. It takes a bit to get going, as our foursome takes up residence in the White House and settles into a mundane routine. But it introduces enough stellar new characters and keeps the laughs coming at such a steady clip that it ends up being one of the more enjoyable films of the year. Zombieland: Double Tap is absolutely inessential, mostly a retread of the original, better film. But when the results are this enjoyable, who am I to argue? The movie also features cameos by Bill Murray and Al Roker.Cast: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail BreslinĪ decade after the original film might be a bit too late for a sequel to a movie that didn't exactly cry out for one. Rosario Dawson was a good addition, but the joke with Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleditch was almost identical to the joke in Shaun of the Dead(which did it better). Zoey Deutch is a nice one or two joke pony, but it felt like her character was around too long (and it was obvious that she wasn’t dead…and that it was an allergic reaction). The unrealistic aspect of this story is that I feel that the characters would have reached this breaking point much sooner, but Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin still feel like a family unit. The cast still works and they’ve grown into their roles. It is about growing up and is still is about defining “family”, but it doesn’t have quite the level of fun of the original. Zombieland: Double Tap has the same theme, but the zombies almost play a bigger role.

It was a story of people coming together…the zombies were almost incidental. The story is a little more fleshed out in Zombieland: Double Tap, but part of the joy of the original movie was the simplicity. This joke killed…when they did it in Shaun of the Dead in 2004 Zombieland: Double Tap has the same themes, feels slightly less original, and is a bit gorier. The film didn’t take itself seriously, but it still had hints of horror that kept it from just being a straight comedy. Zombieland was a fun movie in a mess of zombie-themed media. Following Zombieland in 2009, the film was released to better than average reviews but not to the level of the original. When Little Rock ends up running away with a hippie, pacifist called Berkeley (Avan Jogia), the gang must get her back, but Columbus has a plus-one named Madison (Zoey Deutch) and a new breed of zombies mean Zombieland is getting more dangerous by the minute.ĭirected by Ruben Fleischer, Zombieland: Double Tap is a zombie comedy-horror sequel. Tallahassee still dreams of the world, and Columbus just wants home to feel like home. Columbus wants more from Wichita, and Little Rock wants to grow up. Holed up in the White House, things seem to be going well…but some problems are unsolvable. The years have passed since Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone), and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) met up, but Zombieland marches on. Come back for another vacation in Zombieland
